The Tendency of Coup | Alamir Kamal Farag

By making a study on all the ruling systems all over the world, we find that almost all of these systems are the result of coup. And this term itself may bother some people as they think that it is illegal, so let's call it a sort of revolution, invasion, adjustment movement, or ever a peaceful possession of the power. And whatever this movement was legal or not, the new ruling system has been imposed by force, which is not a natural way to control, whatever this force is a military one, or a political one.

And this movement of coup had happened in many countries along history, like what had happened in Egypt, Tunis, Syria, Yemen, Morocco, Libya, Katter, Sudan, Mauritania, Afghanistan, Romania, And Ocarinas, and also what happened recently in Honduras, Niagara, and many other.

The word (coup) can be defined as: the change of the ruling system of a country by peaceful or non peaceful means, and this change usually come out of the ruling organization itself, whatever this organization is a civil or political one. although coup is differed from revolution, there is a similarity between them which is both of them have the same target which is to rule and take the power by force, whatever this force is a military or a political one.

Some people may think that coups take place only in the countries that need to achieve democracy, as the desire of putting an end to dictatorship is a good justification for coups. But in the countries in which coup had happened, their people were promised to achieve democracy and freedom, and after a while they are surprised that the same repression has been practiced again by the new government. And sometimes the state before and after the coup is the same, in other times it is worse, and the people will be surprised that simply the power moved from the hands of the last dictator to another new one.

We can't deny that democracy is the real grantee that protects countries against coups, so dictatorship is a good reason of coups in the countries where there is no democracy. But sometimes coups happen in democratic countries. So now we can't say that dictatorship is the only reason for coups, as some times we find coups against the elected democratic governments like what had happened in Mauritania, when General Mohammad Weld Abdel-Aziz revolted against, the elected president Mohammed Weld Al-Sheikh Abd-Allah, and the same thing had happened in Honduras when the headmaster of the congress Roperto Metshilty revolted a gains the elected president Manwel Zelaya. In these cases dectatorship can't be a logical reason for coups as democracy didn't help in preventing these coups from happening in the democratic countries.

And this may assert that the tendency of coup is common and even dominated whatever if there is logical reason for coup or not. A people revolted against someone, and then come others who revolted against the revolted ones and so on, so we live in a sequence of several coups all the time. And gradually this phenomenon will be something normal for those citizens who are busy working to satisfy their essential needs. This tendency can be proved by a simple example: Moon Islands, a small Arab country, has witnessed more than twenty movements of coups since its independence from France in 1975.

And what is really strange here is the international forces' situation against coups. We find that the international reactions against such movements of coup are never more than silence and watching what is going to happen and who is going to win the game. The situation is different when these coups are staged against an elected democratic government, in this case the international forces work on the reconstruction of the legislative power. But any way and by the time, all cases are equal and every thing will be alright. Then the international community will accept those revolutionists whatever they were strong or weak, and it, the international community, has no problem to shake hands with those criminals smiling.

The real serious problem now is that the coup, whatever it is a legal movement or not, has so many serious consequences. It is not a game, but it is a step involving a lot of risk. It looks like roulette, that can take you higher or the complete opposite. Coup can make you an international honored hero, and also can make you accused of betraying your country and government, and then your life will end with a capital sentence.

And the main reason of the last contradiction is that there are no moral criteria or credible rules for the legal coup, and so it can make someone a hero and also can make the same one a betrayer, only lucky that can help.

Coup can be the reason of wars which result in killing many causalities and destroying the national wealth. And it also may end by dividing the country into separated parts, like what had happened in Germany (East Germany and West Germany) also what had happened in Yemen in 1967, and finally what had happened in Korea. Nowadays Sudan is liable to this separation. So coup is always full of risks.

I want to assert that this movement of coup can be achieved successfully and without bloodshed, like what had happened in Egypt 1952 when the king Farouk I accepted the peoples' well and didn't use force to resist the movement of (freedom fighters), a group of officers leaded by Gamal Abdel-Naser, the aim of this group was to turn the ruling system of Egypt from being a kingdom to be a republic, and they succeeded without bloodshed , and the king was peacefully excelled , and then Egypt turned to be a republic and the first president was Mohammad Nagid one of the Freedom fighters. The same thing happened in Mauritania and Honduras.

Coup also may cause an encounter by force, which has serious results of killing many people and many other terrible events which are completely against the human rights, like what had happened in Romania in 1998 when the whole army staged a coup against the president, and the president Nekolay Shawshisko and his wife were executed by some officers after a formal trial. The same thing also happened in Iraq after the invasion of the American forces, and what came after that of crimes, and then the Iraqi authority, which was mainly formed by the occupation American forces, had executed the president Sadam Hussin after a formal jest trial. The same events happened also in Yemen when ALi Abd-Allah Saleh staged a coup against his partner Ali Salem, the president of south Yemen, and he achieved to unite the state again.

In many times, the revolutionists commit the same crimes of whom they revolted against, so it became like a movie in which the actors exchange roles, and the spectators are those people, the people, who is forced to watch, and even forced to clap hands in spite of his deep wounds.

Coup may be a movement which aims at reformation and freedom, and also may aim at a robbery, huge robbery of the international wealth of the whole country. And in such circumstances of the absence of moral and political criteria and the presence of international institutions which work according to self interests, not according to justice, man should be more accurate and think deeply to know the difference between the real hero and the betrayer.
