The “Sectarian” Egypt | Alamir Kamal Farag

The twelfth article of the Egyptian-Sudan kingdom Constitution, issued in 1923, stated that “ the absolute freedom of belief”. So what happened to the Egyptians ? And what devil created the idea of “atonement” ?

The Egyptian people was always known for their tolerance with the other religions. We had never noticed that they once faught in favor of a religion or a sect. Egypt always included Muslims, Christians, and Jews. There were also interrelated sects such as Sunni, Shiite, and even Bahai . And no matter the differences of belief, there were always agree .

So, the killing of the five Shiites in Abu Msslam village, Giza, was a strange confusing one, and raised controversy .

We can not think about any crime without consideration of the surrounding circumstances. And when thinking about the incident closely, it will be so easy to discover that the surroundings helped or incited to commit such murder.

Few days ago, the so called “ the legal institution for rights and reformation “ hold a celebration in Cairo Stadium under the title of “supporting the Syrian people”. Some public figures attended the celebration; the former president Mursi and some Salafists leaders including Muhammad Hassan, Muhammad Abdel Maksoud, who incited against the Shiite groups.

The first, Shiekh Muhammad Hassan, asked the president to close the door in the face of “the outs” - a term they created to call the Shiites- as a reaction to the former president’s decision to host the Irani tourists, which raised rejection and fear of increasing Shiism. Whereas the latter described the Shiites of being “dirt”, which is a term used by some Salafists to abuse the Shiites on the platforms of mosques .

Surprisingly, the president did not take any action against this sectarian incitement . He also stood idly when Abdel Maksoud accused 20 million citizens, who signed on the “rebellion campaign” that called for the 30th June revolution to impeach president Mursi and call for early early presidential elections .

This incitement has succeeded with the help of security chaos, lawlessness, and the weakness of the state . All these circumstances have controlled Egypt for two years, and increased during the rule of Mursi . The murders and crimes that increased recently proved that; in which some citizens tried to apply the legitimate (religious) punishments - according to their own view - on others who were accused of rape and theft crimes. They also dismembered their bodies in the streets after unfair questioning that lacked the standard criteria, believing that they are achieving the “social justice”, specially in the light of the security absence. This image confirmed the neglect of the state for the social side in favor of the political one.

It was also enhanced by the “Takfir Fatwas” , which means the statement of accusing people of atoning without any legal or even reasonable justification which caused a general atmosphere of hatred and rejection of the other. These fatwas were actually a permission to kill. Any body could be deceived and so, Volunteer to carry them out believing that it is the good and religious act.

The Shiite Massacre that was the first of its kind in Egypt, it also indicated a serious situation in Egypt and predicted a violence coming crimes , and acted as a threat for the non-Muslims and any one who adopt different views considering the most trivial and simple issues.

The religious fights have been increased specially between the Sunni and Shiites that aimed at dividing the state into smaller communities to be easy to control. This plot actually worked in some countries like Lebanon, Iraq, and Sudan. Now this plot was about to be achieved in Egypt, Syria, and Yemen.

A friend once wrote to me “ Egypt we knew was lost”. His sentence hurt me. Egypt was subjected to a fierce attack to change its historical identity. And although the plot was very clear for us all, we did never imagine Egypt as a “sectarian” country .

In the time of the Muslim Brotherhood ruling system, the criminals were set free, wore stylish suits, and turned to be politicians and heads of political parties. Terrorism started to move under the name of “Jihad”. The murderers became governors and responsible for high rank officials.

During this time, the moderate Egypt has changed, specially in the celebration of the stadium where men with long beards, pretending to represent Islam before crowds shouting for sects. This scene reminded us with the Shiite communities of Iraq and south Lebanon .

During this time, the Egyptians witnessed for the time the sectarian crimes. Egypt was always the safe place for all religions, sects, currents, and the Sufi orders, and at the same time it has a wide place for art, beauty, and freedom.

I agree with my friend who said that we can not recognize Egypt any more in the absence of the political understanding and the failure of the administration system. But i don’t agree with him in using his term of being “lost” , since Egypt has a great historical background, and it’s also able to defeat the Muslim Brotherhood.
