Literary plagiarism | Al Amir Kamal Farag


Since the beginning of my career, I discovered a lot of literary theft, and I remember that the first theft I discovered was when I was in high school, when I found a published poem in a magazine (Youth) under the name of the poet, and after a period of time ; I found the same poem published with another name in the magazine (Samar), I was surprised ,so I kept both, and by following-up and the advantage of me that I never forget something I read, I discovered another theft in the same way, a poem entitled Mustafa Abdul Rahman published in magazine of (Al Arabi), Kuwait, and then the same poem was published in the magazine (Youth) on behalf of another poet.


The Third theft discovered was a poem entitled (if lover mentioned) delivered by one of the poets in the poetry festival, I discovered they are old poem to a Sufi imams, received in religious ceremonies. And I started searching for a printed out for this poem as a guide, and I I found it, an old yellow book got it from One of the old Shekhs of ShadelyaTariqah, Kafr El-Zayat.


After a while,I discovered the fourth theft, it was a poem in hand writing, where I discovered the unpublished text in the (departure poems) by the poet Abdel GawadTayel.


So I have four robberies available with evidence, andmy powerful memory helped me to discover these thefts, and when I have gathered these discoveries, I decided to write about it. It was my first investigative on this subject, which was published in the newspaper (Youth Voice).


It is strange that all thefts discovered were clear plagiarism text. In some cases, the plagirist impersonate a complete poem of another poet and put his name on them. In other cases, the poet steals a large part of the poem, it does not rob a line or two, with no attempt to hide them, but what I discovered was stealing full verses and the same title, and here lies the enormity of theft and boldness.


In the first investigative , I just made clarifications of thefts and alert the writers to it, but after a short time, another theft was discovered which is a slang poem published on behalf of some person in a magazine called (New) - before it was stopped - it dawned on me that it was published by a vernacular poet, though this person who published the poem in his name in the (New Magazine) assured me that the publication of his name on this poem came for typographical error in the magazine.


And then I discovered another theft of a poem entitled (from the heart), bySalehJawdat. And was published in his volume (God, the Nile, and love), I was surprised by the published in one of the bulletins student on behalf of a student, so I had to write back to reveal that plagiarism, and continued to write about the theft until I wrote about nine Investigations about this case, published in the (young voice, Rafii, Republic, Voice of the Arabs, news workers, Crescent, Trade and Industry) revealed nineteen theft poems includes five hundred line and one, and some think I am following publications in order to detect thefts , and this is not true, I discovered the thefts by chance, and I used to have interests to follow the literary press, and I tried to follow part of the literary versions, and when I read any piece, and I remember I read it in the past, I go back to my sources of looking for the work, looking for work for the first theft was discovered .. And so on ..


The largest poetry theft discovered was the theftof a whole volume “Diwan” full of poetry entitled (echo melodies) by the poet Ibrahim HashimFilali, a young poet stole a large part of it, and issued it in volume of his name entitled (heartbeat), that earned him several awards, and was a big surprise for me to discover the theft of this Size.

I hesitated to start writing about this theft, and the reason was that the critic who wrote the introduction Court was one of the leading critics, Dr. Mohammed Mustafa Hadarah, God bless his soul, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, which was at the same time dean of the college where I learned. I was then in the third year, and I was afraid that I might cause embarrassment for Dean by my writing about this terrible theft. This would be an insult and would affect my future.

 and after along thinking and opposition from my parents , I decided to write and let it be whatever it may be, and I said to myself then that if I've become destroyed by what I wrote, it would be an honor for me, and I wrote a story about this theft and published in a book under the title: (adjust .. plagiarism) , and I published it in a newspaper called (Republic) and was the subject of great resonance, and the problem was - as I mentioned - that the Court provider, a senior critics did not realize with his long history of literary theft, and claimed the praise of the thief and praises his style of literary. The second problem was that this topic publishing again extensively in the newspaper of (Voice of the Arabs) and published within excerpts from the stolen texts with a more exciting title that was: (poet steals a full chapter and provided a great critic). That increased my fear of reprisals from the Dean, but it was over in peace, thank God.


The funniest thefts discovered was stealing one of my poems, a poem (la Tazleminy), or “don’t be unjust to me”, published in newspaper (The Evening), and the discovery happened when I received my friend the poet Mohammed Abu Shadi, holding in his hand an album voice announcing a surprise, as he told me that he was listening to the radio on Saturday, and then heard a poem of my poems delivered by one of the persons and ascribes it to himself. Andthen he rushed to the recorder to record it, but he could only record the last part of it, and made listen to it .and found that the recorded portion is not clear by the thief's name, and thus are not evidence of distressed, but soon I was pleased when I learned that the program is re-casted again in weekend, and I recorded the complete the program by the name of a thief (MamdouhShaaban Ibrahim), and the funny thing that happened on the program was that my poem was awardedby ten pounds.


Then I had an evidence to write about. I wrote a story about the incident published under the title : (the Writer who revealed some literary plagiarism, his poems were stolen..!), It is strange that this poem itself was stolen again when I was surprised by a person attached it to the wall magazine at college by his name, When I asked to meet him, he did not deny, and reasoned out his admiration ..!


These topics have resonated, and commented upon, and hailed by a number of journalists, and they hosted me in aprogram called (with writers) at Central Delta Radio in a particular episode, and published in a newspaper (Ambassador) ,Alexandrian , and conducted a newspaper (the Tunisian Freedom) interviewed me about this experience.


Due to the nature of these investigations, I was expecting an attack from thieves and attempts to discredit, so I was keen on having published assets function on the facts, i was also keen for the most part to the deployment of the incident in front of the reader without interference from me in identifying the thief, even though I already know him. it was not the primacy of Publishing is a guide, but other things ; technical and drafting and even typographical errors can be conclusive evidence of the theft.


then plagiarism in this day took a new turn, the turn of forgery and completely spin as was the case in the Abbasid era ; when some people were taking advantage of plagiarism and accused poets to discredit them like that of heresy, which was attached to the innocent.

Plagiarism has become a new heresy pasted haters and ignorant to revengethe serious writers, and found the new heresy of the cultural reality, as a bad environment fertile for the growth and proliferation, it also helped that many people did not know the real rules of the literary theft.


And it became very confusing, and possible for anyone to fabricate a literary theft to another, and the first publication of a poem is not a sign of proportion to the publisher.It may be a thief may. the publisher might get it from the owner or from any audible source and published in his name before it was published the original owner.

 and thus, the precedence Publishing is not an evidence of theft, also some bad people can do it if they follow this way to defame the reputation of others to publish their names and then claim them of theft.


This assures the situation I encountered when some one of the plagiaristsread my investigations, and he predicted - so I imagine - that it may reach him and accuse him of plagiarism–so, he rushed and wrote to a newspaper about one of his subjects that he claimed that it was stolen from him, and the owner of the original poem is a thief.

Unfortunately,the publishing press officer proved that the accusation was false, and found out that he himself was the thief.And the thief interestingly, was imitating my style in my investigations about literary theft, and that was very clear from some of the methods and even thecompositions ofsentences.


Given the conditional rule that says that the criminal always leaves evidence behind, for example, in my stolen poem.., the thief took it from the newspaper (evening).

The newspaper falsely published it with several typographical errors caused imbalance in foot, rhyme, and meanings in some lines, and when it came to steel, the plagiarist took it with the typographical mistakes and that was conclusive evidence that our text taken from newspaper publication (evening), so that the poem as well as newspaper (evening) was published two years before that incident.


speaking about the methods used to identify the thief , there is a research method, and that was in reality stealing full volume, given that the stolen volume from him did not have a date for publication or any information about the poet, so I considered a long the whole volume, and I found by some evidence, including dictionary verbal poet, and the dates of writing poems, and some other observations that gave me an indication that the poet Hijazi, though the volume was issued by Egypt Library in Cairo, also concluded that the volume was issued for the first time in the early fifties.

I used the same method to know the thief, going back to the poems dates in the original volume and the age of the poet, I discovered that the young poet is a thief with no doubt, because it does not make any sense because these poems were written before he was born ..!


my writings about the thefts were of the most successful , despite the troubles they caused for me, and even though it was in the beginning stage, took by the simplicity and enthusiasm, but I am glad as they gave me the ability to confrontation and bombing cases, but I’m sad that this issue remains so far without real understanding for different dimensions, and decisive solutions to reduce them.

And, in my point of view,  there are a lot of solutions put forward in some of my investigations, the first of these was increasing the awareness of the real concept of theft of poetry, there are those who think that any similarity in meaning or poetic theft combination, and this is of course wrong because theft is not only in an innovative new meaning, and not in regular structures commonly used or shared by everyone, as AbdalqahrJerjany mentioned in the (evidence of miracles): (meanings and words cast in the way defined by the Arab and foreigner, and the theft is not only to be innovative in the new sense).


The real problem is the lack of awareness of this concept, so it is the duty of critics to increase the publicawareness of these things so theft is not a way to slander and verbal abuse and create a domain of personal conflicts.

On the other hand, the various publications that set new rules for publication by which they guarantee insurance documentation of the name person with printed or the reader who posted him to ensure his responsibility for what is published under his name to return to it in the event of theft.


Also, some of the attention and care of supervisors on literary journalism can reduce this phenomenon. all the thefts discovered were not discovered by chance, but regular following-up for the literary movement, also Unions writers and literary agencies can create views to document the literary works , and get the a reference document to prove their ownership of literary work if exposed to steal their business.


At the level of creativity, it is required reconsideration of the names (quote, modulated, and the opposition of poetry) because I believe that the bases are still non-specific, making it a back door to theft and plagiarism.


And the literary theft remains as long as poetic creativity is found, and of course we cannot eliminate it forever, we can only reduce it and put it in the real framework and increase awareness aboutits correct concepts.
