Without Nationality | Alamir Kamal Farag

What might happen if some people chose to live without a nationality ? is it opposed to their access to rights and commitment to duties? Is it required for a citizen who lives in a country to get its nationality? Aren't there other motifs , i.e. tourism, that may cause several nationalities to live in the same country and to be committed to the main rules of its society and there is no problem about that! But what about the multinational holders! To which country are they loyal to ?

Does this phenomenon appear in some countries, the phenomenon of some people who are "without nationality"? these countries try to solve their problem by granting them the citizenship after long-term procedures, although still big number of them with no nationality. The observer of the illegal immigration and the circumstances faced by the immigrants will find that as soon as they reach their destination, they tore up their passports, so no one would know their real nationality, as they think at that case they can be considered as refugees or any other contemporary legal status. What is the feeling of a person who has lost his nationality? Whatever the way or the reasons? Like the members of a border tribe, Egyptians married to Israeli women, or some one who is accused of being a terrorist? What is his feeling? Is he sad? Depressed? Does he feel lost? Or is it easy for him ???

What is he going to do? How can he face it? Is the nationality so important that some states consider its taking away as a punishment? What is the role played by the nationality in the new world that depends mainly on openness and globalization?

Can a citizen give away his nationality and live just without it? And shall he get the right to do that and live within the country at the same time? What will be the attitude of the authorities towards him? is he going to be accused of high treason? Is he going to be deprived of all the rights he accessed before when he used to hold the nationality of his home country?

Nationality shouldn't be the only link between man and his society, all people should get the freedom of choice, including the freedom to choose to live with or without any nationality, this choice should be accompanied by getting the full rights and commitment to the full duties, wherever the citizen lives. Nationality should be dealt with as religion, that any body has the freedom to choose. As some countries allow citizens to live with no specific religion, why don't they allow them to live without a nationality!

The researcher of the international system will find out that nationality always represented an obstacle in the way for more cooperation and unity between different peoples in the world. And some times it was the main reason of racial discrimination, intolerance, and conflict; not only between peoples of the  world but also between the citizens living in the same country.

Till now, some people are partisan to a tribe or a region although all of them are of the same nationality of a country, we find a specific class that doesn't admit with others and considering them as marginalized group, like what happens with some immigrants and refugees when the original people of a country refuse to incorporate with them, marry from them, and don't even admit them after they acquire a citizenship.

Discrimination of all kinds is the main motif, it was always the great motivation for wars along history, that killed and displaced millions of people. If you don't believe me, could you tell me which war the nationality didn't play a role to start it? The WWI, WWII, the Balkan wars, the Israeli-Arab wars, and others, all these wars were motivated mainly by national discrimination. And so on, this is enhanced by the less number of wars between the holders of the same nationality along history.

Nationality was always the main criterion of classification, evaluation, and treatment, not at the Arab level only, but on the international level as well. All of us know about the prestige that the Western, specially the American, passport holder enjoys, unlike the standard position of the Arab and other nationalities.

Some times the passport became a curse on his holder, and all of us know very well what different kinds of discrimination the Arab and Muslims face in the Western airports because of their nationalities . we also know the envy that some people feel towards the holders of the American nationality. This is because the American support for Israel all the time.

Although the strict rules of granting a citizenship in almost all countries, the U. S. government grants their nationality for any baby born on its territory or even in its airspace, which makes many Arab pregnant women compete to get their before their giving birth, so their kids may get the American nationality, their  dream.

As long as the nationality causes all these problems and wars, not only on the local level, but on the international one as well, why don't we just remove it??? And every body becomes with no nationality. A new world is being shaped right now, a new world where no place for nationality and the main criteria are the personality and the experience that may be offered, not religion nor language. If we could get rid of that system of nationality, we can then put an end to discrimination, classification, and prejudices. The current citizenship system is a strict tough one.

Removing the citizenship system is a strange idea for some people, they may even consider it as a kind of fantasy, but it will be achieved soon when the whole world unites. Then, citizenship would be a reactionary old idea. The only accessible nationality then would be "human" .
