Lonely in the desert | Alamir Kamal Farag

In one of the old Egyptian movies, there was a dialog between a man and his friend talking about their friend, the first man said: “He was about to do a disaster; he was driving by 100km/h”. This simple statement refers to who much crazy was the driving by 100 km/h during 1650s. Nowadays, this idea is completely different and has been changed a lot. Now driving by 100 km/h fast is some thing usual, and even in some countries, it is not allowed to drive less than this limit while driving in the highway. And if you drive less than this, you will have to pay a fine, as driving slow in the highways may cause accidents.

Also many things in our life had changed a lot, and many things will change. There will be new rules, new laws, and a special view in life.

When paying attention to this matter, we will find that change is a natural characteristic of man and is not devil deeds as some may think. Change is the life code, it is considered as a theory of life theories, and except for change life would stop and time never pass. Change is a real continues process, not only in traditions and costumes, but in many other things. Also many things, that we trust and believe that they are facts, may change, like the way of thinking and the personal point of view. Change is a main characteristic of life and a main base to keep its endurance and permanence.

Any thing new is described by the word (devil), this word, although it is a metaphoric word, is used to express any thing new and strange. Once upon a time there was a rustic girl who had never travelled outside her country, when she had to travel away, to get medical treatment, she went to the airport and saw the airplane for the first time, and she was so surprised and shocked that she called the airplane "a devil". The point is that man always feels hostility towards anything that is unknown to him.

Everything has been changed, for example; the tools used in the past times to plough the field and irrigate the crops. In the past times man used "the water wheel" to irrigate his field. It is a huge circular wheel fixed from its center vertically in a way that permits its circular movement to bring water from the deep ditch up to the field. The farmer at the past sought the assistance of animals that go round horizontally in a mechanism using a cogwheel to make the "water wheel" run. Everything had been developed and now there are electrical machines that able to achieve the task by one click, without any help of man.

And this is case in every domain in life. Everything has been changed; tools, theories, discoveries, medicine, surgery, language, fashion, music, arts, etc. In the past there were some different genres of literary works which disappeared and other new genres have emerged. Also there were a lot of theories which had disappeared while new ideas and thoughts have appeared.

Almost everything in our life has changed, and the tempo of change affects every thing every minute. So, it's logical that the way of thinking itself and the way we deal with things change. Facts are facts of course, but when thoughts about those facts change, here will be the shock , or let's say, a misunderstanding. So the way of thinking should be renewable all the time to suite the continuous change of everything all the time.

Let's consider the modern inventions which contributed in changing the man life from the Stone Age till now, the age of the space shuttles. Let's consider the medical development and the different drug that contributed to cure the man’s pain, while in the past man was liable to die because of flue, so the medical development and invention of drugs saved his life. Let's consider the diseases which were not known before and have been discovered recently like: Aids, Hepatitis, and the inherited diseases, all these diseases were discovered in the Modern Age. Let's consider the thick glasses in the past and the new contact lenses, and the Lasic operations which put an end to the age of glasses.

Even the weather can change. Weather and seasons that people thought that they are facts that cannot change Changed. The phenomenon of the high sea level, the dissolution of the poles, and the Greenhouse effect all are phenomena that prove the climate change.

Even beliefs are liable to change in spite of their Divine rules and principles. Of course these rules are facts that don't accept any change in its nature, but some rules may change according to the ages and the sequence of changes in the nature of life and people. This change is considerable while giving religion advisory opinions. Also the independent opinion or judgment is a divine order; it also renews the belief and makes it more vital and suitable for any time anywhere.

In spite being the change as the feature of the age and the main element of the continuous developing life, there are some people who still refuse any kind of change. They accuse the callers for change of being secular, and many other changes that are not meant to classify them as real seculars, but it is meant to just abuse them and to express hostility towards them.

Many people insist on carrying on their traditions and customs even if these customs were not practically suitable for this time, sometimes they insist on these customs and tradition even if they were opposed to the religion rules. Traditions for some people have the same authority and respect of religion. Some people can't make any difference between traditions and rules of religion.

Talking about technical field, some people insist on using the primitive tools, and refuse to use the modern machines. This may be because they don't know how to use the modern machines or persisting in the past and longing to these days.

In some rare cases, some people have an association between religion and everything modern. They falsely think that modernization is opposed to Islam, also there are some who think that fashion, like neat closes and ties, is forbidden in Islam. They think that it is an imitation for the foreign non-Muslims. Some people, for sorry, still think that using computers, photography, and practicing sports in clubs are forbidden!

We can never forget the debate which was hold in Egypt during the 1950s, between Mustafa Sadek Al-Rafaey and Doctor Mahamoud Azmy about wearing Tarboosh (the fez), and hats. Each one explains his reasons why he thought his opinion is true. The first said that the "Tarboosh" is something original in the Egyptian culture, while the hat is came from the Western culture. And after years, the Egyptians themselves refuse both the Tarboosh and the hat.

The point is: Islam has no relation to what you wear; it is a vital religion which is good for all times and ages. It is the religion and belief of the nature of man, and it considered very well the developing changing nature of man. Islam welcomes and even encourages the process of changing into better. It encourages the human race to develop, work hard and also to consider and contemplate of the creation of the universe. But some people still insist on considering them as inflexible rules, those people stand against any kind of change.

The person who refuses development and change, he put himself in a prison by his own freewill, and spends the rest of his life in a cave. He gains nothing but isolation and backwardness. And finally he will discover that he does not understand what is going on around him, cannot communicate with people, people cannot communicate with him, and every one will leave him to go through life. He will feel as if he is lonely in the desert.
