Mind Engines | Al Amir Kamal Farag

The Internet aces that entered our lives 25 years ago, has created many transitions and changes, not only in terms of knowledge, but on the social, political, psychological levels , besides media, and methods of human communication in general.

One of the new features that have occurred in our lives because of Internet is how to get information. After man was seeking information from friends, neighbors and co - workers, and at an advanced stage came the television channels – first in black and white- getting information became as easy as a click.

In the ancient times, man used to believe in some proverbs and cultural heritage, like “consulting”. But after the easy access to the internet, we don’t consult anyone; we rush quickly to the computer, and search the internet for any topic to get a flood of information about it.

And it is not limited to the average citizen, but exceeded the educated, not only that , but the search engines have become an essential source of information for journalists, reporters, researchers, even officials and decision - makers, and here lies the danger .

Online Researcher don’t consider that the information obtained from the Internet may be wrong, and, of course , it’s  possible - because publishing online is available for all categories and the ignorant, good and bad alike-  there are no controls for publishing on the Internet .

Even encyclopedic sites assumed the credibility might not be assured, like "Wikipedia" suffered from the same disease, as it allows for all documentation of their information even if they are wrong, and ducking responsibility by putting the words "article stubs need to be developed". The user bears the responsibility of edits, since we only host your content.

We recognize that the Internet has many benefits, but also it has many negatives. It has contributed to search sites, especially  "Google" in the spread of knowledge .. There is no doubt about it, but it also contributed to the spread of ignorance. If only it was limited to only the erroneous information that may really cause a lot of harm, especially if it is medical, but beyond that that the Internet has become, unfortunately, a way of inciting terrorism and murder, and the proof is that the terrorist organization ISIS is recruiting 70% of its supporters via the Internet.

in October 2015, Google announced that "more than 100 billion searches a month , more than half are using smart phones", and if we remember that the world s population is 7 billion people, and the estimated percentage of correct information and wrong ones, you will realize the size of the problem I am talking about.

The advanced technology Gave us giant search engines, but they stopped our brains muscle from working to Find real information with evidence and experience, it gave us easy ways to get the information, but it was delicious quick food but harm than good, it was exciting and delicious information, but it was in fact more like a poison.

I call on those responsible for Google to deal with this problem quickly, and develop a mechanism to limit the information with unknown source or evidence, by setting clear words to the user s own language stating that: "the Internet is an extensively wide source for information, but it does not guarantee the validity of this information."

Also it can rank sites according to their degree of reliability, to be – for example - green sites, and at least a yellow, and red ones – according to their reliability, so the assistant researcher can reach the correct information.

Thanks God, technology has provided us with technical Search engines, while we actually need “mind engines” to help us thinking, comparing, and forming opinion.
